
Richard Xu is the co-founder and CEO of xBloom, a specialty-coffee hardware company founded in the San Francisco Bay Area. Before starting xBloom, he worked as an engineer at Apple, where he developed a deep appreciation for thoughtful hardware design, tactile interfaces, and products that quietly integrate into everyday rituals. A longtime specialty coffee enthusiast, Richard co-founded xBloom after becoming frustrated by how difficult it was to consistently recreate café-quality pour-over coffee at home without turning the kitchen counter into a science experiment. Since launching in 2022, xBloom has received significant recognition, including awards such as Time Best Inventions, CES Best of Innovation, and the 2025 iF Design Gold Award for its all-in-one specialty coffee system.

01 Origin. What problem, frustration, or quiet conviction made your company/product(s) necessary? Take us back to the moment the idea wouldn't leave you alone.
There was a period when we kept trying to make café-quality coffee at home, and it kept falling short in a way that didn’t make sense.
We were using incredible beans from roasters we genuinely admired, watching brewing tutorials late at night, dialing in recipes, adjusting grind sizes, water temperature, and ratios, doing everything “right.” And yet the results were inconsistent. Some mornings the coffee tasted like something you’d get from a great café. The next day, with the same beans and process, it fell flat.
That inconsistency became the real frustration—not the lack of tools but the lack of reliability. Specialty coffee had evolved into an incredibly thoughtful, global craft, but at home it still felt fragile, dependent on too many variables, too much precision, and too many ways to get it wrong. It started to feel like you had to become a part-time barista just to reliably enjoy a good cup.
The kitchen counter chaos came later: grinder, kettle, scale, filters. But it was more of a symptom than a cause. The deeper issue was that the experience didn’t hold up in everyday life. At one point, we realized that we were spending more time troubleshooting coffee than actually enjoying it. That was the beginning of xBloom.
We weren’t trying to remove the ritual or reduce coffee to convenience. We love the slowness, the aroma, the craft, and the connection to roasters. What we wanted to remove was the unpredictability, the gap between intention and outcome. So the question became simple: could we preserve the precision and beauty of pour-over coffee while making it reliably reproducible at home? That’s the origin of our product.

02 The constraint that shaped it. Every well-made object is defined as much by what it isn't as what it is. What was the hardest constraint you worked within, and how did it sharpen the final product?
In coffee, convenience is not the hardest problem. It’s preservation. From the beginning, we were working within a constraint that felt almost unfair: whatever we built had to preserve the integrity of the bean all the way through the “last mile,” from roaster to cup, without flattening the character that makes specialty coffee meaningful in the first place. That shifted the center of gravity for us. It meant the machine couldn’t be designed in isolation. It had to be accountable to the people who understood coffee best: the roasters. We traveled to meet them and often carried early prototypes that were far from finished. Some conversations were direct: the machine simply wasn’t worthy of their beans yet. Others turned into unexpected collaborations, tasting sessions, open feedback loops, and technical debates about variables we hadn’t even fully defined ourselves, such as optimal water flow rates in different roast contexts. There was no established industry standard for many of these details, which meant we had to define them together.
At one point, we stopped thinking of ourselves as the ones “ensuring quality.” The quality already existed in the roasting. Our responsibility was narrower and harder: not to interfere with it. That constraint forced us away from conventional machine design. Traditional approaches to brewing control, such as timers, presets, and static flow, weren’t enough to reproduce what skilled baristas do intuitively: adjusting agitation, pacing extraction, and responding to the coffee bed in real time.
This led us toward more radical ideas, including a patented solid-state pouring system that modulates water flow electrostatically. The goal wasn't novelty. It was fidelity, a way to choreograph water with the same sensitivity a barista brings to a manual pour. As Jon Allen from Onyx Coffee Lab told us after tasting early prototypes, the difference was immediate. We weren’t explaining the machine; we were just letting the coffee speak. That became the constraint we kept returning to: if the coffee doesn’t taste like itself, nothing else matters.



03 A design decision you defended. Walk us through one choice that was questioned, debated, or pushed back on, and why you held the line.
One decision that we constantly defended was resisting the urge to make the product look “futuristic.” From the perspective of an electronics consumer, there’s a version of this machine that would probably make more immediate sense. Bigger display. More animations. More obvious indicators that “technology” is happening. At one point, we even explored interface directions that felt closer to tablets or smart home devices. But every time we moved in that direction, the machine lost something.
We didn’t want xBloom to feel disposable or trend-driven. We wanted it to feel timeless, almost like studio equipment or a well-made audio device. That’s where the dot-matrix display and knurled metal knobs came from. We were more inspired by tactile hardware and analog instruments than by touchscreen appliances.
The same thinking shaped the brewing motion itself. The kinematic brewer is technically very complicated, but we spent a surprising amount of time refining how it physically moves because we didn’t want the motion to feel robotic or aggressive. Watching it brew needed to feel calming, almost meditative.
Minimal products are actually harder to design because there’s nowhere to hide bad decisions. Every proportion becomes more noticeable. Every material transition matters more.
There were definitely moments when we questioned whether we were being too restrained. But looking back, that restraint became the product’s identity. People often tell us the Studio feels less like an appliance and more like something they intentionally chose to live with in their space. That was always the goal.


04 What you removed. Form and Function lives in what's left after the cuts. What did you take out, leave on the cutting room floor, or refuse to add?
We removed far more than we added. There’s always pressure in connected hardware to keep layering on features. More customization. More settings. More automation. More things that demo well in meetings. We went through phases where the product did much more than the final version. But over time, we realized a lot of those additions were creating noise instead of improving the experience.
One thing we kept coming back to was the feeling of modern software constantly demanding attention. Notifications. Menus. Endless options. We didn’t want coffee to feel like that. Coffee is one of the few rituals that people still genuinely slow down to enact. So, we started cutting aggressively.
We removed interface complexity wherever possible. We intentionally avoided making the machine touchscreen-centric because we didn’t want users staring at another glossy display first thing in the morning. We simplified workflows down to a few physical interactions. Even visually, we worked hard to make the machine feel quiet on a countertop instead of visually loud.
We also resisted building a closed ecosystem. A lot of pod systems optimize for convenience by limiting freedom. We wanted users to have both. Someone can use an xPod and brew an excellent cup in seconds, or they can spend an hour experimenting with their own beans and recipes. That balance mattered to us. A lot of the final product came from asking, “What can we remove without losing the experience?” Not asking, “What else can we add?”


05 What's next, and what stays the same? Where is the brand going from here, and what will never change about how you make things?
Right now, what excites us the most is expanding the world around the machine rather than simply adding more hardware features. One thing that we learned early on is that people don’t actually fall in love with coffee equipment. They fall in love with rituals, discoveries, and the feelings that surround the experience. The equipment just shapes how accessible those moments become.
That’s why we care so much about the connection between drinkers and roasters. Some of our favorite moments have been watching people discover a coffee from a small independent roaster they otherwise never would have encountered. Suddenly, there’s a story behind the cup. A region. A producer. A processing method. The experience becomes larger than the machine itself.
Going forward, we want to continue building around that idea of connection and exploration. More roaster collaborations. More ways to help people discover coffees they genuinely love. More flexibility for both beginners and deeply experienced brewers.
What won’t change is our belief that technology should reduce friction without removing humanity.
We never want to automate the soul out of coffee. The ritual still matters. The slowness still matters. The sensory part still matters.
If anything, our goal is to create more space for people to enjoy those things instead of spending their mornings troubleshooting equipment.
