It would be strange to print a magazine about craftsmanship carelessly. So we didn't. Issue 01 is a 6″ × 9″ trade volume, perfect-bound, on matte stock chosen for how photographs hold ink, not for how cheap it runs.
And every copy is printed because someone asked for it. No warehouse pallets, no overruns, no unsold stacks headed for the pulper. One copy, made on purpose, for the person who wanted it. Intentionality is sort of our whole thing.

When will Issue 01 arrive?
The first mailing goes out in mid-July. You'll get an email from us before it ships to complete your order, and another with tracking once your copy is in the mail. Orders placed after the first mailing are printed and shipped as they come in.
Am I paying anything today?
No. Reserving is free and just holds your place in line. We'll email you to complete payment ($32 for the single issue, $109 for the annual subscription) before Issue 01 ships.
Why pre-order instead of waiting?
Reserving puts you in the first mailing in mid-July, and the debut only happens once. Issue 01 is the first thing we'll ever print, and the readers who reserve it are the ones this publication gets built with.
How does the annual subscription work?
$109 covers four quarterly issues, starting with Issue 01. That's $19 less than buying each issue separately, and every issue arrives without you thinking about it again.
What about shipping?
Shipping is calculated at checkout when you complete your order. We ship anywhere in the US; reply to any of our emails if you're international and we'll sort it out.
Who makes this?
Form & Function is an independent publication based in Roanoke, Virginia, run by founder Spencer Scott Pugh and editor-in-chief Carter Davis Johnson, with a small team that genuinely loves this stuff. We also publish a free weekly newsletter where every brand in the magazine first told their story.
